The orphanage is in the diocese of Yaroslavl under the authority of
Bishop Michei. It is situated
on the territory the former St.Alexis convent, 65 miles North
East from Moscow. The Convent
was looted and destroyed during the Soviet period.
In the early 1990s Father Alexis Vasilenko was made priest
of the Church of the Holy Spirit (built in 1824 by the Golitsyn
and Gagarin families) in the nearby village of Novoye.
As the ruins of the Convent were within his parish Father
Alexis began to reconstruct it using his own funds and donations.
The community now consists of 250 people, including 50
orphans, 4 priests, 7 nuns, many teachers, laborers and pilgrims. Until 1996 the children attended the local village school; however
now the orphanage has its own school where they receive a substantial
theological, humanitarian and scientific education.
